Zoomed out

When middle age came up on Stelltjie, she would often say how her arms were now too short. If she wanted to read well, the scribbles had to be kept a little further, even further...

Since my husband can barely see the end of his nose, let alone his toes, I have been his personal toenail technician. This week, however, I heard a very nervous giggle behind me as I held his toes further, even further away, so that my aim can come into focus!

In the same way, it sometimes feels as if I lose my focus when familiar text becomes too familiar and, in a certain sense, blurred.

Sometimes it feels like I have to zoom out a bit so that old things could take on new meaning for me:

“Whatever you do [no matter what it is] in word or deed,

do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus [and in dependence on Him],

giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

Col 3:17 AMP

What if I were to iron these trousers

as if Jesus would wear it next?

What if I mopped this kitchen floor

as if Jesus would come over for dinner tonight?

What if I were to clean these toilets

as if Jesus would be the next one to use it?

What if I were to drive

as if Jesus would be in the car in front of me?

What if I were to chat on social media

as if Jesus would scroll through it every now and then?

What if I were to watch this series

as if Jesus would sit next to me with the popcorn?

What if I went to bed at a sensible time tonight

as if Jesus would shadow me at work tomorrow?

What if I weighed and seasoned my words carefully

as if Jesus would have to eat it?

What if I were to go to church

as if Jesus would be keeping me a seat next to Him?

Because isn't this the real intention of the "everything" that Paul is talking about here?

"...whatever you do…

…do everything…”

Whatever you do.

Everything.

Turning my life into one big “thank You”.
